Bocconi University President Mario Monti, former prime minister of Italy and now senator for life, will visit Taiwan with his wife from March 8 to 10.

During their stay, the couple will have an audience with President Ma Ying-jeou and call on Minister of Foreign Affairs David Y. L. Lin, who will host a dinner to welcome them. President Monti will speak on the future of Europe at a seminar held by National Chengchi University, a sister school of Bocconi University. This trip will give him a deeper understanding of the Republic of China and advance bilateral exchanges and cooperation in a wide range of areas, including trade, economy, culture, and education.

In recent years, the economic relations between Taiwan and Italy have grown steadily. The two sides completed due procedures regarding the avoidance of double taxation and tax evasion December 31, 2015, which took effect January 1, 2016, benefitting future bilateral trade and investment relations, technical exchanges, and cooperation on taxes and tariffs. In addition, last October in Florence, Italy, the National Palace Museum held the Giuseppe Castiglione—Lang Shining New Media Art Exhibition, bearing testimony to the close exchanges between Taiwan and Italy.
