In a speech commemorating the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe reiterated the stance of previous administrations, reflecting on the mistake of initiating war, and elaborations on his country’s previous expressions of deep regrets and remorse and heartfelt apology. He also stressed the need for Japan to remember the lessons of the past and help foster peace and prosperity throughout the international community. The Republic of China government hopes that the Japanese government will face historical facts engage in deep introspection, and strive to develop friendly, cooperative relations with neighboring nations using a more forward-looking and responsible attitude so that countries can work together to promote peace and stability in the region.

Taiwan and Japan have developed solid and cordial relations since the end of the war, forming an exemplary model for other Asian countries to shake off the shadow of war and pursue rapprochement and cooperation. Since taking office in 2008, President Ma Ying-jeou has highly valued Taiwan-Japan relations, calling them a special partnership. As a result, the friendship growing from long-term bilateral cooperation has borne great fruit.  For instance, in April 2013, Taiwan and Japan signed a fisheries agreement, promoting peace and cooperation in the East China Sea and further ensuring peace and stability in East Asia.
