Following China’s May 23 launch of a two-day military drill in waters around Taiwan, the House of Representatives of the Netherlands on that same day passed a motion calling on the Dutch government to pursue a joint effort with the European Union and like-minded European nations to maintain the status quo across the Taiwan Strait and enhance cooperation with Taiwan. The motion was adopted by an overwhelming majority, with 146 of 150 members voting in favor. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of China (Taiwan) sincerely appreciates this support.

The friendly motion was jointly proposed by Representative Ruben Brekelmans of the People’s Party for Freedom and Democracy and Representative Jan Paternotte of Democrats 66. This represents yet another concrete act of support for Taiwan following a motion approved by the house in April calling on the Dutch government to urge EU member states to back Taiwan’s international participation.
