Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with his counterpart during a visit to Tajikistan from May 18 to 19. After the meeting, China issued a press release with  false claims in an effort to undermine Taiwan’s sovereignty which said that Tajikistan staunchly supported China’s position on Taiwan, firmly adhered to the “one China principle,” considered Taiwan an inseparable part of China, and opposed any form of Taiwan independence. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) strongly refutes these claims.

The Republic of China (Taiwan) is a sovereign and independent country. Neither the R.O.C. (Taiwan) nor the People’s Republic of China is subordinate to the other. The PRC has never governed Taiwan. This is the long-standing status quo across the Taiwan Strait. MOFA strongly protests and condemns the PRC government for constantly disseminating false statements in the international arena and attributing them to other countries in an attempt to diminish Taiwan’s sovereignty by disregarding objective and internationally recognized facts.

MOFA reiterates that political coercion and diplomatic suppression by the authoritarian Chinese government will never change Taiwan’s staunch democratic convictions. Taiwan is a bastion of free and democratic institutions and will continue to enhance cooperation with like-minded partners to jointly counter China’s rhetorical and military intimidation; curb authoritarian expansionism; preserve peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait; and promote global economic security and prosperous development.
