Chinese leader Xi Jinping and Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic on May 8 signed a joint statement on deepening and elevating the comprehensive strategic partnership and building a China-Serbia community with a shared future in the new era. In the joint statement, Serbia expressed firm support of the “one China principle” and falsely claimed that Taiwan was an inalienable part of Chinese territory. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) strongly protests against attempts by China and Serbia to ignore the status quo across the Taiwan Strait and jointly suppress Taiwan’s sovereign status.

MOFA reiterates that the Republic of China (Taiwan) is a sovereign and independent country, that neither the R.O.C. (Taiwan) nor the People’s Republic of China is subordinate to the other, and that the PRC has never ruled Taiwan even for a single day. No narratives aimed at misrepresenting Taiwan’s sovereign status will alter the status quo across the Taiwan Strait or the objective and internationally recognized facts.

As an important member of the global democratic community, Taiwan will steadfastly uphold the values of democracy and freedom. It will proactively work with diplomatic allies and like-minded nations to jointly safeguard democracy, peace, and stability across the globe and in the region.
