The Group of Seven (G7) Foreign Ministers’ Meeting was held in Capri, Italy, from April 17 to 19. Following the meeting, the ministers issued a communiqué reaffirming the importance of peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait as indispensable to security and prosperity for the whole international community. They also called for peaceful resolution of cross-strait issues and endorsed Taiwan’s meaningful participation in international organizations and mechanisms, including the World Health Assembly and World Health Organization.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) of the Republic of China (Taiwan) strongly welcomes the communiqué and sincerely thanks the G7 countries for continuing to demonstrate, through concrete action, support for cross-strait peace and stability and Taiwan’s international participation.
The G7 foreign ministers also issued communiqués strongly condemning Iran’s attack against Israel earlier this month, as well as Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine. They reiterated their commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific based on respect for international law, serious concern about the situation in the East and South China Seas, as well as strong opposition to any unilateral attempts to change the status quo by force or coercion and to China’s repeated attempts to obstruct the freedom of navigation in the high seas.
Since the 2021 G7 Leaders’ Summit held in Cornwall, the United Kingdom, G7 members have reaffirmed, in multiple joint communiqués over the past four years, the importance they place on peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait, underscoring the fact that cross-strait security is closely intertwined with global security and prosperity. As an important country in the Indo-Pacific and a responsible member of the international community, Taiwan will continue to work with G7 members and other like-minded nations to jointly ensure a free and open Indo-Pacific, safeguard the rules-based international order, strengthen the resilience of the global democratic community, and defend the universal values of democracy, freedom, the rule of law, and human rights.
