United States President Joe Biden, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, and Philippine President Ferdinand R. Marcos., Jr. held a trilateral summit in Washington, DC, on April 11. Following the meeting, they issued a joint statement affirming the importance of peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait as an indispensable element of global security and prosperity. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) highly welcomes and appreciates this first trilateral statement by the leaders of the United States, Japan, and the Philippines on their firm position on cross-strait peace and stability.
China’s military intimidation and gray-zone coercion in the region constitute a formidable challenge to regional security and the rules-based international order, eliciting significant international concern. This week, the importance of peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait was raised at the press conference following the meeting between the US secretary of state and the UK secretary of state for foreign, commonwealth and development affairs and in the joint statements issued following the US-Japan summit and the US-Japan-Philippines summit. This points to a high level of international consensus on the issue. As a responsible member of the global village, Taiwan will continue to cooperate with the United States, the United Kingdom, Japan, the Philippines, and other like-minded partners to advance peace, stability, and prosperity in the region.
