Minister of Foreign Affairs Jaushieh Joseph Wu met with a Brazilian delegation comprising members of the Chamber of Deputies Geraldo Junio do Amaral and Fernanda Eneida Pessoa Caracas de Souza, as well as Justice of the Superior Labor Court Ives Gandra da Silva Martins Filho, in the afternoon of March 22. Deputy Amaral is also chairperson of the Taiwan Friendship Group of the Chamber of Deputies.
During the meeting, they exchanged views on a wide range of issues covering bilateral economic, trade, and technological exchanges; judicial exchanges and cooperation; and developments across the Taiwan Strait. They also pledged to further deepen the substantive and cordial relations between Taiwan and Brazil.
Minister Wu commended Chairperson Amaral and other Brazilian parliamentarians friendly to Taiwan for staunchly defending the core values of freedom, democracy, and human rights. He also thanked them for dauntlessly forming the Taiwan Friendship Group last October despite pressure from China and for backing Taiwan’s participation in international organizations through letters, joint proposals, motions, and other means.
Chairperson Amaral stated that in spite of considerable challenges, the Taiwan Friendship Group was eventually formed after 212 members of the Chamber of Deputies cosigned the related proposal. He said that the group looked forward to expanding exchanges and cooperation between Taiwan and Brazil under this framework and promoting legislation that would benefit the welfare of both peoples.
Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Remus Li-kuo Chen hosted a reception for the delegation. The members thanked the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) for its warm hospitality and meticulously planned itinerary. They also expressed deep admiration for Taiwan’s democracy, rule of law, industrial development, talent incubation, and other accomplishments, which they observed on this trip. They said that they would continue to encourage cordial interaction and enhance the substantive relations between the two countries.
During the delegation’s stay from March 18 to 22, the members called on the Legislative Yuan, the Judicial Yuan, MOFA, the Ministry of Justice, and other government agencies. They also visited the 2024 Smart City Summit & Expo, the 2050 Net Zero City Expo, the Hsinchu Science Park Administration, and the Songshan Cultural and Creative Park. (E)
