David Adeang was elected president of the Republic of Nauru, a diplomatic ally of the Republic of China (Taiwan), in a parliamentary vote on October 30. Ambassador of the R.O.C. (Taiwan) to Nauru Lin Dean-Shiang immediately congratulated President Adeang on behalf of the government.
Members of the Parliament of Nauru passed a vote of no confidence in then President Russ Joseph Kun on October 25 and immediately voted to elect a new president in accordance with the constitution.
President Adeang is currently the most senior member of the Parliament of Nauru. He has previously served as parliamentary speaker, minister of justice, minister of foreign affairs and trade, minister of finance, minister for Nauru Airlines, minister of multicultural affairs, and other positions. President Adeang has visited Taiwan many times, including in 2005 with then President Ludwig Scotty to sign a communiqué on the resumption of diplomatic relations. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will maintain close contact with the new government of Nauru and continue to deepen exchanges between the countries based on the existing firm foundations of cooperation.
The diplomatic relationship between Taiwan and Nauru is solid, and mutual visits between high-level officials of the two nations are frequent. Cooperation projects in areas such as infrastructure development, public health, medicine, climate change, clean energy, ICT, agriculture, fisheries, education, and maritime patrols have produced tangible results that are widely recognized by the people and government of Nauru.
