Foreign Minister Wu hosts luncheon for delegation led by Nauru President Kun and his wife, thanks Nauru for strong support of Taiwan

Minister of Foreign Affairs Jaushieh Joseph Wu hosted a luncheon for a delegation led by President of the Republic of Nauru Russ Joseph Kun and his wife on October 8, warmly welcoming the group on behalf of the people and government of the Republic of China (Taiwan).

 

In his remarks, Minister Wu noted that President Kun was visiting Taiwan to participate in National Day celebrations and attend the Yushan Forum, which fully demonstrated his support for the cordial diplomatic partnership between Taiwan and Nauru. Minister Wu said that the government of Nauru had long backed Taiwan’s participation in international organizations. On September 21, President Kun spoke up for Taiwan in the General Debate of the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly. Minister Wu expressed the sincere appreciation of the people and government of Taiwan for Nauru’s support. 

 

Minister Wu explained that Taiwan and Nauru had continued to deepen their close cooperation in many domains in recent years, producing fruitful results and yielding economic and social benefits. He stated that the two countries would further strengthen cooperation in fields such as talent development, postpandemic economic recovery, climate change, clean energy, public health and medical care, ICT, and maritime patrols, adding that the expansion of comprehensive bilateral ties would contribute to the well-being of the peoples of both nations.

 

President Kun expressed gratitude for Taiwan’s long-term assistance in Nauru’s national development, stating that cooperation projects across all spheres had benefited the people of Nauru. He stressed that Nauru was a staunch diplomatic ally of Taiwan and that he was leading this delegation to take part in National Day activities in order to personally demonstrate his support for Taiwan. President Kun further stated that Nauru would continue to back Taiwan in the international community and endorse its international participation. 

 

The 17-member delegation led by President Kun and his wife arrived in Taiwan on the morning of October 8 and will depart on the evening of October 12. (E)
