President Petr Pavel of the Czech Republic expressed concern over the situation across the Taiwan Strait and support for Taiwan during his address to the 78th United Nations General Assembly on September 19. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) of the Republic of China (Taiwan) sincerely appreciates his statement.
In his address, President Pavel raised the Taiwan Strait issue and condemned China for escalating tensions in the region. He said, “In Asia and Pacific, Czechia is an active and reliable ally and partner. The word ‘cooperation’ must remain key for our joint efforts in the region. We deplore China’s military actions which raised tensions in the Taiwan Strait and its unfriendly actions against partners in the South China Sea. Any dispute or contentious issue must be solved peacefully. Any potential armed conflict in the region would have negative consequences for the whole world.”
MOFA welcomes democratic partners steadfastly supporting Taiwan through concrete action. Taiwan will continue to deepen cooperation with the Czech Republic and other like-minded partners to jointly respond to the challenges and threats that authoritarian China poses to the global democratic community; to defend the principles of freedom, peace, and equality in the international system; and to safeguard the shared core values staunchly upheld by the global democratic community.
