The G7 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting was held in New York on September 18. Newly appointed Foreign Minister Kamikawa Yoko of Japan, which serves as chair of the G7, issued a statement afterward. The statement reaffirmed the importance of peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait as indispensable to security and prosperity in the international community and called for the peaceful resolution of cross-strait issues. It reiterated the group’s support for Taiwan’s meaningful participation in international organizations. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) of the Republic of China (Taiwan) highly welcomes and expresses gratitude for this statement.
The statement conveyed the G7’s strong opposition to any unilateral attempts to change the status quo by force or coercion, and called on China to uphold the purposes and principles of the UN Charter. It further expressed serious concern about the situation in the East and South China Seas and opposition to China’s militarization and other provocative activities in the region.
Both the G7 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in April and the G7 Hiroshima Leaders’ Communiqué in May emphasized the importance of peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait. MOFA thanks G7 member countries for their firm support of Taiwan. As a key and responsible country in the Indo-Pacific region, Taiwan will continue to collaborate with G7 member countries and like-minded nations to uphold the rules-based international order, maintain a free and open Indo-Pacific region, and contribute to global peace, stability, and prosperity.
