In seeking to help war-ravaged Ukraine, Republic of China (Taiwan) Representative to Poland Bob Chen, on behalf of the government, signed a cooperation agreement with Wojtek Wilk, Chief Executive Officer of the Polish Center for International Aid, on July 29. The signing was witnessed by National Development Council Minister Kung Ming-hsin, who is currently leading a delegation on a visit to Poland. According to the agreement, Taiwan will work with Poland on efforts to rebuild hospitals and schools in Ukraine, winterize facilities for elderly people, and establish an employment center for single women and a distance-learning facility for youth. Humanitarian aid supplies will also be sent to refugee shelters in Ukraine.
Since the start of the war, many people of Ukraine have sought places of escape, relocating to relatively safer areas, which has put those locales’ medical, educational, and social welfare resources under stress. Ukrainian refugee centers are in desperate need of humanitarian relief. With this new accord between Taiwan and Poland, Taiwan will be able to use the rich experience of the Polish Center for International Aid in providing international relief and send expert teams familiar with the situation on the ground in Ukraine to provide assistance. By cooperating with Poland, Taiwan will be better able to help Ukraine, bringing hope to the war-weary Ukrainian people.
The Russia-Ukraine war continues to ravage the lives and property of the Ukrainian people. Taiwan and Ukraine both stand on the front line against authoritarianism and share the universal values of freedom, democracy, and respect for human rights. Taiwan will continue to provide humanitarian assistance to Ukraine and help the people of Ukraine get through this difficult time. (E)
