The government of the Republic of China (Taiwan) on July 19 appointed Representative Bob L. J. Chen of the Taipei Representative Office in Poland to sign an MOU with Chairperson Mariia Bochenkova of Future Kyiv, a foundation designated by the Kyiv city government, to facilitate Taiwan’s donation of US$2.5 million toward building a bridge allowing access to the city’s Obolonsky Island.

The Greater Paris Metropolitan Region of France has also contributed US$1 million to the bridge construction project. A joint effort by Taiwan, France, and other countries to support Ukraine’s reconstruction underscores the significance of solidarity and cooperation within the democratic community during the Russia-Ukraine war. It also highlights the deep sense of friendship and empathy the democratic community holds for the Ukrainian people.

Taiwan and Ukraine share the universal values of freedom, democracy, and human rights. With both countries standing on the front line of authoritarian expansionist threats, Taiwan understands the predicament of the Ukrainian people. Since the Russia-Ukraine war broke out, Taiwan, with Western democracies, has staunchly supported Ukraine and continues to provide humanitarian assistance to help it withstand adversity. (E)
