President of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) Félix-Antoine Tshisekedi Tshilombo and leader of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) government Xi Jinping on May 26 issued the Joint Statement on Establishing a Comprehensive Strategic Cooperative Partnership between the People’s Republic of China and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, proclaiming that the DRC reaffirms its firm commitment to the “one-China principle,” regards Taiwan as an inalienable part of China, and opposes any actions or remarks that subvert China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) of the Republic of China (Taiwan) adamantly protests the false narratives the CCP government continues to disseminate in the international arena that undermine Taiwan’s sovereignty and strongly denounces the DRC government for its inappropriate subservience to China.
MOFA reiterates that neither the Republic of China (Taiwan) nor the People’s Republic of China is subordinate to the other. The CCP regime has never had jurisdiction over Taiwan for a single day. Taiwan is a democracy that safeguards democratic institutions and respects human rights and the rule of law. In contrast, China, under the autocratic CCP regime, with malevolence at its core, persecutes human rights, engages in willful expansion, and bullies neighboring countries. No matter how the CCP regime attempts to distort Taiwan’s sovereign status, it cannot change the internationally recognized status quo across the Taiwan Strait. Its claims will only increase the Taiwanese people’s abhorrence of and antipathy toward the Chinese government as well as enhance international understanding of the CCP regime’s appetite for aggressive expansion.
Taiwan is on the front lines defending democracy. The people and government of Taiwan are united and stand as one against rhetorical and military intimidation from communist China. Taiwan will also strengthen cooperation with fellow democracies to counter authoritarian expansion, preserve peace and security across the Taiwan Strait, maintain a free and open Indo-Pacific, and ensure global stability and prosperity.
