The United States House of Representatives Committee on Foreign Affairs on May 16 passed the Taiwan International Solidarity Act, which aims to counter China’s attempts to distort United Nations General Assembly Resolution 2758 and undermine Taiwan’s participation in international organizations.
The bill states that UNGA Resolution 2758 “established the representatives of the Government of the People’s Republic of China as the only lawful representatives of China to the United Nations” and adds that “the resolution did not address the issue of representation of Taiwan and its people in the United Nations or any related organizations.” The bill also underscores that “the United States opposes any initiative that seeks to change Taiwan’s status without the consent of the people.” Representative Michael McCaul (R-TX), Chair of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, and Representative Gregory Meeks (D-NY), the committee’s Ranking Member, were among congressional leaders who publicly expressed a high level of support for the bill, stating that Taiwan’s exclusion from the UN system is detrimental to the international community.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) of the Republic of China (Taiwan) again thanks the US Congress for its staunch bipartisan support for Taiwan’s participation in international organizations. It is of profound significance that the US Congress has acted to counter China’s malicious distortion of UNGA Resolution 2758 at a critical time just days before the 76th World Health Assembly. As a responsible member of the international community, Taiwan will continue to strengthen its close cooperation with the United States and other like-minded countries and do its utmost to contribute to the world in the face of common challenges.
