Guatemala is a staunch diplomatic ally of the Republic of China (Taiwan). The two countries enjoy seamless cooperation and frequent interactions. At Taiwan’s invitation, President Alejandro Eduardo Giammattei Falla of Guatemala is on a state visit to Taiwan. In an address to the Legislative Yuan and during his bilateral meeting with President Tsai Ing-wen, he repeatedly declared his strong support for Taiwan, fully demonstrating the close and cordial relations between the two countries.

When Taiwan engages in interactions and exchanges with diplomatic allies, it exercises a basic right of a sovereign nation and fosters unity among democracies. Other countries have no right to intervene; nor can the Chinese authoritarian government change this reality through pressure or coercion. China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has again acted without any dignity by making insulting statements of utmost disrespect regarding the head of state of a diplomatic ally of Taiwan. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) again solemnly protests and condemns such discourtesy, which fails to meet the norms of civilized society.

The Republic of China (Taiwan) is a sovereign and independent country. Neither the R.O.C. (Taiwan) nor the People’s Republic of China is subordinate to the other. Such facts are both objective reality and the status quo. Taiwan will continue to work together with free and democratic partners to firmly safeguard universal values and beliefs. In accordance with its sovereignty, Taiwan will promote diplomacy and strive for the international status to which it is entitled.
