On April 20, US President Joe Biden spoke separately with President Ursula von der Leyen of the European Commission and President Emmanuel Macron of France. During both calls, the importance of maintaining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait was reiterated. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) of the Republic of China (Taiwan) welcomes President Biden’s firm commitment to the united position that the United States and its transatlantic allies hold on the issue of the Taiwan Strait and appreciates the United States’ staunch support for Taiwan.

Peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait are critical to the security and prosperity of the Indo-Pacific. China has recently used President Tsai Ing-wen’s overseas visits and transit stops in the United States as a pretext for escalating its military threats and coercion against Taiwan, posing a severe challenge to regional security and stability. The United States, Japan, the European Union, the United Kingdom, the Republic of Korea, Poland, Lithuania, Germany, Australia, New Zealand, and other democracies have expressed serious concern over China’s actions, demonstrating the global interest that exists for maintaining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait and that any unilateral disruption to the status quo by China cannot be tolerated. MOFA will continue to cooperate with the United States and other like-minded partners to jointly safeguard democratic values and preserve peace, stability, and prosperity across the Taiwan Strait and throughout the region.
