MOFA response to joint statement by US Secretary of State Blinken and Czech Foreign Minister Lipavský reaffirming the importance of maintaining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait

May 3, 2023

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken met with Czech Minister of Foreign Affairs Jan Lipavský on May 2. After the meeting, they issued the Joint Statement on the Strategic Dialogue between the United States and the Czech Republic, which reiterated the commitment of both nations to preserving peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait and to deepening support and cooperation with Taiwan and other democratic partners in the region. It also underscored the fact that transatlantic and Indo-Pacific security are indivisible. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) of the Republic of China (Taiwan) welcomes and appreciates these statements.

Since 2022, China has used various pretexts to escalate coercion and military intimidation against Taiwan on numerous occasions, posing serious challenges to regional security and drawing significant concern from the international community. In recent months, many partners have reaffirmed the importance of maintaining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait on different occasions, including the US-Philippines summit on May 1, the US-ROK summit on April 26, and US President Joe Biden’s separate phone calls with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and French President Emmanuel Macron on April 20. These statements highlight the high degree of consensus among countries worldwide on the importance of maintaining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait.

MOFA will continue to work with the United States and other like-minded partners to uphold democratic values and safeguard peace, stability, and prosperity across the Taiwan Strait and the region.
