MOFA response to EU High Representative Borrell’s calling for European navies to patrol Taiwan Strait

April 23, 2023

In an article published in the French newspaper Le Journal Du Dimanche, European Union High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell wrote that Taiwan concerns Europe economically, commercially, and technologically, and called for navies of European countries to patrol the Taiwan Strait to demonstrate Europe’s commitment to freedom of navigation in this extremely crucial area. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) of the Republic of China (Taiwan) highly appreciates and affirms the European Union’s strong concern for security across the Taiwan Strait and support for a free and open Indo-Pacific.

On multiple occasions recently, the European Union has publicly expressed support for peace, stability, and the status quo across the Taiwan Strait, as well as opposition to unilateral change to the cross-strait status quo and all military threats. It has stressed Taiwan’s importance to Europe’s geostrategic interests in terms of semiconductor supply and maintenance of peace, fully reflecting Europe’s high regard and backing for Taiwan.

As a key member of the Indo-Pacific region, Taiwan will continue to deepen exchanges and cooperation across all domains with the European Union and other like-minded democratic partners so as to further strengthen the resilience of critical industrial supply chains and jointly safeguard peace, stability, and prosperity across the Taiwan Strait and in the Indo-Pacific.
