Eastern Afghanistan was struck by a powerful earthquake on June 22, causing heavy casualties and widespread devastation. The following day, the government of the Republic of China (Taiwan) announced a donation of US$1 million to disaster relief efforts. After assessing local needs, the government decided to work with the Turkish Red Crescent (TRC)—an internationally recognized charity with many years of experience in Afghanistan. The cooperation will provide immediate assistance to those affected and demonstrate the humanitarian spirit that Taiwan can help. The Taipei Economic and Cultural Mission in Ankara and the TRC signed a partnership agreement to facilitate Taiwan’s donation of US$1 million. The cooperation will provide relief to affected Afghan people and assist reconstruction of disaster-hit areas. The first batch of emergency supplies, including food and medical items, were quickly delivered to affected areas for distribution. The TRC will continue to use Taiwan’s funds in the postdisaster recovery phase to repair schools and homes damaged by the quake.

The 6.1-magnitude earthquake hit the southeastern city of Khost on June 22, killing at least 1,150 people, injuring 3,000, and destroying more than 2,000 homes. It was Afghanistan’s most severe earthquake in nearly two decades. With the understanding that disaster relief transcends national borders, Taiwan was among the first group of countries to respond to the international call to provide emergency support to Afghanistan. Taiwan hopes to lead by example and contribute to a virtuous cycle of international goodwill. It also hopes that reconstruction in disaster-hit areas will proceed smoothly so that affected people can return quickly and safely to their homes. (E)
