North Korea launched two short-range ballistic missiles from the Tongchon area of Kangwon Province toward the Sea of Japan on the morning of October 28 between 10:59 and 11:18 Taipei time. The United States, Japan, and the Republic of Korea condemned North Korea’s military provocation, which undermines regional peace and stability.

Since January, North Korea has conducted 28 missile tests in the Korean Peninsula area. It has stated that it does not rule out a preemptive nuclear strike under certain conditions and has started restoring tunnels at a nuclear test site that was demolished in 2018, further escalating regional tensions. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) of the Republic of China (Taiwan) expresses grave concern over North Korea’s repeated missile tests and strongly condemns its military intimidation, which disregards the expectations of peace-loving countries in the region and contravenes United Nations Security Council bans.

The government of Taiwan continues to closely monitor North Korea’s provocative actions and their potential impact on the region. As an important member of the Indo-Pacific community, Taiwan recognizes efforts by regional countries to denuclearize the Korean Peninsula. Taiwan is willing to cooperate with related measures initiated by the international community and work with like-minded countries to jointly curb authoritarian expansion and aggression, uphold the rules-based international order, and preserve a free and open Indo-Pacific.
