Nikolai Chuikov, grandson of Soviet Marshal Vasily Chuikov, and his wife, Galina Chuikova, will visit the Republic of China (ROC) at the invitation of its government between October 26 and 31 to commemorate the 70th anniversary of victory in the War of Resistance against Japan.

Chuikov, on his first visit to the ROC, will be presented with a commemorative medal from President Ma Ying-jeou to honor his grandfather’s contributions to the ROC during the war. The couple will then visit the Truth of the Second Sino-Japanese War exhibition at National Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall in Taipei and pay tribute to late ROC President Chiang Kai-shek at Cihu Mausoleum. Chuikov also hopes to find historical material related to his grandfather at Academia Historica and other agencies.

A renowned military leader, Marshal Vasily Chuikov helped turn the tide of battle in Europe. Between 1940 and 1942, he made three trips to the ROC and served as the Soviet Union’s chief military liaison to the ROC from January 1941. His main mission in China was to help bolster the nation’s overall war-making capabilities to fight the Japanese military. Unlike his contemporaries posted as military observers from European countries and the United States, Marshal Chuikov believed that China would be able to fend off the Japanese invasion and gain a final victory.
