Since Honduran President Iris Xiomara Castro Sarmiento assumed office, the Republic of China (Taiwan) government has been actively negotiating bilateral cooperation with the Honduran government to the best of its capabilities, demonstrating the utmost goodwill in assisting with the development of Honduras. On March 14, President Castro announced in a tweet that she had instructed Honduran Minister of Foreign Affairs Eduardo Enrique Reina to develop official relations with China. The Taiwan government has since continued to engage in dialogue with Honduras regarding the maintenance of diplomatic relations and has reiterated the risks of blindly trusting China’s commitments with regard to diplomatic relations.
By sending Foreign Minister Reina to China to discuss the establishment of diplomatic relations, the government of Honduras is disregarding the diplomatic friendship between Taiwan and Honduras that has endured for over 80 years. Honduras is also ignoring the achievements of the long-standing cooperation between our nations, as well as Taiwan’s goodwill in providing assistance to help solve Honduras’s problems. These actions seriously hurt the feelings of the government and people of Taiwan. The Taiwan government has therefore decided to recall its ambassador to Honduras with immediate effect to express its strong dissatisfaction. (E)
