MOFA response to the passing of His Holiness Benedict XVI, Pope Emeritus

The Holy See Press Office announced on December 31, 2022, the death of Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI. President Tsai Ing-wen promptly instructed the Embassy of the Republic of China (Taiwan) to the Holy See to extend sincere condolences on behalf of the government and people of Taiwan. Foreign Minister Jaushieh Joseph Wu also contacted the Apostolic Nunciature of the Holy See in Taipei to express condolences. As Taiwan and the Holy See enjoy close diplomatic ties, President Tsai Ing-wen has designated former Vice President Chen Chien-jen to attend the Pope Emeritus’s funeral as her special envoy to convey heartfelt sympathies from Taiwan. The Holy See has thanked Taiwan for its sincere condolences.

 

During his papacy from 2005 to 2013, Pope Benedict XVI maintained close and cordial ties with Taiwan. At this sorrowful time, the government and people of Taiwan mourn his passing. He will always be remembered for his humility and concern for all humanity. Looking ahead, Taiwan will continue to promote cooperation with the Holy See and the Catholic Church on humanitarian assistance to further deepen the long-standing friendship between Taiwan and the Vatican, which is based on shared values.
