The 48th Group of Seven (G7) Leaders’ Summit successfully concluded in Elmau, Germany, at noon today. The joint communiqué issued at its conclusion again underscored the importance of peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait and encouraged the peaceful resolution of cross-strait issues. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) of the Republic of China (Taiwan) warmly welcomes and sincerely appreciates this concrete action, taken by the leaders of the G7 nations and the European Union for a second consecutive year, placing importance on peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait.
The G7 leaders expressed their position on this issue for the first time in their joint communiqué issued on June 13, 2021. Similar statements followed in 2022 at the Japan-Australia Leaders’ Meeting on January 6, the United States-Japan Summits on January 21 and May 23, the EU-Japan Summit on May 12, and the US-Republic of Korea Leaders’ Summit on May 21. The fact that G7 Leaders’ Communiqués have reiterated the importance of peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait for two consecutive years highlights once again the international consensus that has developed and the high regard in which the world’s major democracies hold this issue.
This year, with Germany holding the rotating presidency of the G7, the G7 Leaders’ Summit saw leaders from Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, the US, and the EU gather in Schloss Elmau in the southern German state of Bavaria. Participants exchanged views on diplomacy and security policy, climate change, the global pandemic, and the crisis triggered by the Russia-Ukraine war. They also announced the launch of the Partnership for Global Infrastructure and Investment, including the injection of US$600 billion into the initiative over five years, to build sustainable infrastructure to counter climate change. The leaders of Argentina, India, Indonesia, Senegal, and South Africa were also invited to attend the summit.
As a responsible stakeholder in the global community, Taiwan will continue to work with democratic partners worldwide to safeguard the values-based international order. It will also uphold transparency, high standards, and values-driven democratic principles in deepening cooperation with G7 members and other like-minded countries to safeguard peace, stability, economic prosperity, and sustainable development throughout the Indo-Pacific region.
