During a meeting with Chinese leader Xi Jinping on January 24, Prime Minister Gaston Browne of Antigua and Barbuda falsely claimed that Taiwan “was, is, and will always be a province of China.” He said that Antigua and Barbuda would continue to firmly abide by the “one China principle” and staunchly support China in safeguarding its national sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The Republic of China (Taiwan) is an independent and sovereign nation. Neither the Republic of China (Taiwan) nor the People’s Republic of China is subordinate to the other. The PRC has never governed Taiwan. These are internationally recognized facts and the objective status quo. No country has the right to unilaterally deny Taiwan’s sovereign status, and Taiwan will not bow to political coercion or diplomatic suppression by the authoritarian Chinese Communist Party government. Taiwan will continue to resolutely uphold the values of freedom and democracy and proactively consolidate ties with diplomatic allies and like-minded countries to jointly preserve democracy, peace, and stability in the region and around the world.
